NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 1 -The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is targeting to have 100 per cent coverage while conducting the national census starting on August 24, 2019.

KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi says the bureau is ready as it finalizes on training those selected to conduct the exercise.

“We want to assure Kenyans that plans for the 2019 census are proceeding as scheduled. All arms of government are working together to ensure that the enumeration process will go on smoothly. The training of the census personnel is ongoing and the assembling of the data collection devices is ongoing and is set to be complete the coming weeks,” he said.

Planning Principal Secretary Saitoti Torome added that the government has had enough time to prepare for the exercise, which saw the recruitment of 2,700 ICT supervisors, 27,000 content monitoring supervisors and 135,000 enumerators.

“The 2019 census is an important exercise that will be used to collect data used by the government in planning and execution of development initiatives envisaged in Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and its Big Four Agenda,” he said.

He urged all Kenyans to be ready for the count , on the night of 24th August, 2019.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics will for the first time conduct an electronic countrywide census next month, costing Sh18.5 billion.

While giving an update on the forthcoming national census on early this month, he stated that the computer program to be used has already been designed, developed and tested.

Moi University and the Jomo Kenya University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) will assemble 164,700 data-capture devices at the cost of Sh15,000 each.

Mwangi said the decision was deliberate because they believed that the country has the capacity to assemble the devices.

The 2019 national census will be the first one under the 2010 constitution.

The last census was conducted in 2009.
