NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 3 – The number of free-to-air television channels in Kenya increased to 81 in the three months ending in March 2019, four years after the government switched off analogue signals.
This is according to the latest data by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), which also states that digital TV subscriptions increased slightly by 1.5 per cent to 5.8 million during the period.
As far as programming is concerned, music had the highest weekly average at 32.4 per cent while talk shows genre was rated second with a weekly average of 21.6 percent in local programming.
Religious shows came in third at 20.4 percent, followed by magazine shows at distance 7 percent and documentaries and education at 5.8 percent.
The report comes at a time when the media industry ‘is in a state of flux where players in the space must continually innovate if they must remain relevant’, according to CA Director General Francis Wangusi.
“As the industry undergoes massive disruption from both traditional and new competitors, the challenge rests with the broadcast industry to respond with appropriate models, new set of skills, capabilities and strategies that will be required to succeed,” he said.
