NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 7-Motorists across the country can now pay for their parking fees using Lipa Na M-PESA 1Tap card in 50 locations countrywide, including malls and hospitals.
This follows a partnership between Safaricom and Kenya Airports Parking Services (KAPS) which will enable motorists to pay for parking by M-PESA, allowing cashless payments.
Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer Sitoyo Lopokoiyoit on Thursday said this will offer their customers convenience, ease and simplicity.
“Motorists can now enjoy the freedom from having to carry around cash, the hassle of looking for change and queuing to pay for parking,” he said.
The service can be accessed by dialing *486# which will enable Safaricom customers to make payments with M-PESA.
The customer will be able to view their bill before making the payment.
Customers using the Lipa Na Mpesa 1Tap card will get their entire parking fee back for the first three transactions they make.
Chief Executive Officer KAPS Bonnyventure Saronge said the partnership will enable Safaricom customers to use their M-PESA 1Tap cards in place of the KAPS card to access and exit parking lots.
“Our objective has been to drive cashless parking payments and we are glad to partner with Safaricom in this initiative,” said Saronge.
The service is already available at more than 52 locations including Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa, Nanyuki and Nakuru.
Cashless payments will also benefit parking service providers by reducing the point of failure associated with cash machines, and the need to collect and transport cash from parking points.
