NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 28 – Kenyans on social media woke up to a scramble for Safaricom’s free platinum plan data after the telco suffered a system malfunction at its headquarters on Friday.
Several users confirmed purchasing up to 64GB worth of data, for free during the system hitch.
Using the caption ‘Safaricom Twaweza’, Twitter user James Wambua uploaded a screenshot of the telco notifying him that his line will be deactivated for 24 hours to compensate for the data purchased illegally.
Hitmaker Nyashinski took to Twitter to thank Safaricom writing; “Congratulations to #Safaricom, you did well to Kenyans this morning. Bundles za maana. (Great data.)”
Memes after memes were generated about the malfunction.
“I have 5TB Bundles. I just wanna thank Safaricom. Tuko pamoja kila wakati. (We’re together all the time) #Safaricom when we come together great things happen,” @galgallo_ wrote.
“Harambee Stars won AFCON yesternight. #Safaricom surprised us today,” @MikeMcPinder wrote.
“Leo kazi ni kucharge simu #safaricom,” @Femmeshea said.
“#Safaricom kumbe ilikuwa holiday harambee wakishinda. (It turns out Safaricom was on holiday as Harambee Stars won their match at AFCON.) Good morning world,” wrote @sashimicarson.
Those who missed the opportunity were not left behind, taking to Twitter to lament.
“I am going to the police. How could I miss such reward from Safaricom? Me thinks twas harambee stars appreciation morning,” @geffrugut said.
“It’s 10 years since my mom warned me about waking up late, nimeanza kuona adverse effects sasa hii saf heist imenipita tuh ivih,” kipkiru90110345 wrote.
The telco is yet to issue a statement over the matter.
