Tracy Wanjiru and Anita Nderu ventured to one of the ten Korean restaurants in Kenya. Daejanggeum Korean Restaurant / 대장금 located in a guest house on the corner of Ndemi Road and Killimani Road. Daejanggeum, or “Jewel in the palace” as Tracy and Anita explain, is based on the 2003 Lee Byung-hoon television series. One of the biggest television series in Korea at that time.

Starting the preparation for a simple Bulgogi; Bul meaning fire and Gogi meaning meat. It was prepared exactly how you’d expect. On top of the fire perfectly fits a plethora of fresh, healthy ingredient that fill the wok pan (Korean cuisine really put health and flavor above anything else). From fresh mushrooms to onions, carrots and soy sauce marinated beef; you could smell the deliciousness as soon as the wok got hot and the food stirred up.

Korean cuisine is an entire experience from the minute you lay your eyes on the food. Tasting the food with all your senses and being allowed to elevate simple everyday ingredients proves to be a delight for the entire cooking experience.

Another delicious meal was Bibimbapa, a Korean rice dish. The term “bibim” meaning a mixture various ingredients, while the “bap” noun referring to rice was yet another interactive dish to make with family and friends. The bowl consists of carrot, cucumber, bean sprout, meat, lettuce, onion and a sunny side up egg; which were all mixed together to ensure a spoonful of all the amazing ingredients.

samgyupsal meaning three layers is another delicious Korean dish to try out. Pork fried with garlic and chilly is as mouth watering as you can imagine. The of course you can not leave out what is considered the superfood of the 21st century…Kimchi. Kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine, is a famous traditional side dish of salted and fermented vegetables, such as napa cabbage and Korean radish, made with a widely varying selection of seasonings.

Why visit a Korean restaurant? Well it’s a great first date experience to break the ice as you get to cook with your partner. It’s a great way to introduce your children to healthy meals and cooking. It’s a great girls night out, order some wine and laugh as you cook (and try to pronounce the dishes). You can put your own twist to the dishes and really have fun with it.
