MACHAKOS, Kenya, Apr 2 – The recent biometric registration of officers in the National Police Service netted 2,648 ghost workers, who have been receiving monthly salaries.

The shocking details were made public by President Uhuru Kenyatta when he launched the National Integrated Identity Management System in Machakos Tuesday, saying the country will now save Sh1.8 billion annually.

The Kenya Police had the most ghost workers at 1,447 with the Administration Police with 1,048 while the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had 153 unaccounted personnel.

The President says such anomalies are likely to found once every Kenyan is registered under NIMS, which will see citizens, foreigners and refugees have a unique identification number dubbed Huduma Namba.
